
Queen Latifah was born to Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. The second child of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most famous for her involvement in performance skills, political stance and a talent for rhyme. At the age of 8 older an Muslim friend gave her the nickname Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing in the choir of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" as the character of Dorothy in a show of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Her mother was a key influencer; she was in touch with the school and with the music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was requested by Latifah's daughter to perform during the dance.
